This is impossible to answer without seeing the guy “pull his string,” but sometimes guitarists bend, or pull the string above or below the fretboard…the area above the nut where the strings rest on their way to the tuning keys, or after the strings pass over the bridge.
Sometimes guitarist fet a note…then grab the string off the fretboard and pull it or bend it…simply to get a higher pitch, or even a kind of pedal steel effect.
That’s the best I can say without knowing more.
